i remember steve sitting in front of me in class first period. he was half asleep, and always up to something mischevious and i loved his energy. he is missed.
Steve never lost his sense of humor and fought his illness with real courage. I was visiting Steve in the hospital just two or three days before he died and at that point it was clear he wasn't going to beat the disease. His ex-wife was visiting and his then current girlfriend walks in. The two of them started giving each other a hard time about something. Steve, who had been dozing off, opens one eye, grins at me and says, " Pfeifer, I can handle the cancer, but having these two in the same room is going to kill me". We miss you Steve.
I first met Steve at Whiteoak Jr High. We ended up in the same home room class. We first met when we were the only 2 left in the class without "locker mates". We became locker mates.
Steve would often suprise me by keeping small animals or maybe a snake in the locker. I would never know what exactly to expect. Sometimes he would say "be careful opening the locker today".
I will always remember him as a nice guy and a friend. I often think of him.
I didn't know Steve that well during our High School days. A couple of years later, I got to know him alot better when I discovered we were in the same Marine Corps unit at Andrews AirForce Base.
When I think back on those days, he's always in my thoughts.
